From humble beginnings to one of Cheshire’s best-loved independent retailers, Platt’s Menswear and Formal Hire is celebrating 50 years in business this year. The Crewe store, which is now situated in Mill Street, first opened its doors in Edleston Road in late Spring of 1966, under the name of Clifford Platt (Tailors and Outfitters) Ltd, with Clifford Platt and his two sons Ray and David at the helm.
“I remember us all waiting, full of apprehension , checking that the cloths were neatly folded, that the pattern books were in order and wondering who would be our first customer. The family waited as one hour turned into two, then slowly to eight and the end of the day came without anyone passing through the door. The next day was just the same, and the next”.
“We questioned what we would do with mouths to feed”, added David. “So out of desperation, we decided that if the mountain wouldn’t come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain. The next day our mother looked after the shop while we set off with pattern books in hand to cold canvas most of the surrounding area, street-by-street, farm after farm, trying to take orders for our made to measure suits. “The hard work eventually paid off, we were in business.”
In 1992 the business expanded, opening a formal hire and workshop above the existing menswear shop in Mill Street, a few years later the hire department moved downstairs to be incorporated into an expanded ground floor business.
Today, the business is run by Susie, David’s daughter along with a number of valued staff and store manager Jamie Hodkinson, who celebrates 20 years with company.
Platt’s still takes pride in offering the finest menswear and formal hire products from around the world together with a first class same day service when necessary.
