2020’s film awards season is officially over for now, with the very prevalent subject of environmentalism cropping up thanks – in part – to the pairing up of actor Joaquin Phoenix and fashion designer Stella McCartney.

Phoenix, a well-established environmental activist, pledged to wear only one tuxedo to every awards ceremony he attended for the season – which, with Joker nominated left right and centre, got a fair bit of use.

Stella McCartney used her official Instagram to announce the news, writing:

‘This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet and all of its creatures. He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud and honoured to join forces with you Joaquin, keep inspiring and keep shining your light x Stella’.

However, the comments from the designer were criticised on social media for allegedly being out of touch. Many believed Phoenix’s effort was too insignificant to make a real impact, with some sarcastically quipping that it was going to be the cause of the end of global warming.

Regardless, the step taken was an unusual one for the awards season, and may well pave the way for the re-using of fashion pieces as the accepted norm.

At Platt’s, we are a stockist of the German designer Wilvorst, which promotes its so-called ‘green weddings’. It uses pure wool cloths with natural stretch, made in Italy with azo-free dyes. Azo dyes have been found by some studies to be potentially carcinogenic, and are the most common kind of dye used in the textile industry. Everything from the buttons to the pocket square in a Wilvorst suit is made with sustainable materials, made in fair working conditions in Germany or elsewhere in the European Union, so you can be sure that the suit for your big day was made with the planet in mind.

Check out the Wilvorst website for the full information.

We’re also proud stockists of Eton Shirts, which has a firm policy on sustainability, stating:

‘For us, high quality equals sustainability. We aim to produce long-lasting garments and to minimize negative environmental and social impact while doing so. We believe that the first step to a more sustainable clothing industry is to promote durable and timeless products.’

The company also promises to never compromise on labour conditions and works with only a few long-term partners.

Another way for the environmentally-conscious to implement sustainability in a small way in your life is by hiring clothes instead of buying them. This way, they are cleaned and re-used, meaning that fewer clothes need to be manufactured and bought. At Platt’s, you can view our full range of suits for hire instore or online.
